What Is Black Oxide?

Black oxide is a chemical conversion coating applied to steel, cast iron, and ductile iron parts. It’s not just a surface layer — it chemically reacts with the metal to create a dark finish with almost zero dimensional change. This makes it ideal for precision parts and components where tight tolerances are important.

What Materials Can Be Treated?

We work with a wide range of metal parts made from:

  • Mild steel
  • Cast iron
  • Ductile iron

Note: Black oxide does not work on stainless steel.

Equipment Capabilities

Our facility includes large-capacity tanks that allow us to black oxide parts of all sizes, from tiny screws to bars over 13 feet long.

  • Up to 165″ long bars/shafts

The Process

Here’s how we make your parts look great:

  1. Cleaning – We start by soaking parts in a cleaner tank to remove oil and debris.
  2. Rinsing – Clean parts are thoroughly rinsed.
  3. De-rusting – A mild acid dip removes light rust.
  4. Black Oxide Treatment – Parts are immersed in the black oxide tank for 20–30 minutes.
  5. Final Rinse – Another rinse ensures clean results.
  6. Oil Finish – A fast-drying oil is applied for that signature finish.

Most jobs are completed in 1 business day, with 1–3 days for larger orders.
